Last night at 7:35pm I got a call from a good friend saying that I had 20 minutes to hustle to Madison Square Garden and claim a ticket to see Phish who were playing at 8pm. A dedicated music fan from a young age, somehow throughout my adolescence and college years I totally avoided their repertoire in its entirety. I decided to forego the evening planned and quickly hurried over to MSG. I was struck by a few things… Phish fans really like Phish. Like really, really. The hemp market is alive and well. People still do acid. Only White and Asian people like Phish. In addition to a learning experience, it was the largest display of public pot-smoking I ever witnessed (enjoyed). Am I now a Phishead? No. Am I moving to Vermont? No. However, there is something strong to be said for a band that has such a fervent emotional connection with their fans - especially in the crowded musical climate of today. Consider me curious…
